FWW Galbert Stool

Hello,

Is anyone out there considering or actively building the curved-leg stool described in a Fine Woodworking article by Pater Galbert? I have been working on gluing up some clear 2 inch pine boards for the seat and also assembling the bending jig. The 1/2 inch felt just arrived a few days ago.

I decided to build mine with green oak legs. Mainly because I have plenty of straight grained green red oak. I turned the legs and am drying the tenons prior to bending.

I am a carpenter by trade.Also a handyman/Jack -of-all-trades.I work around my neighborhood mostly helping people keep up their old houses.I have a fairly large woodworking shop in my house where I work with both hand and power tools. At the moment I'm focusing on Windsor chairs building.I will build most anything if needed. I'm always learning,adapting,changing trying to broaden my woodworking skills.I work mostly with hand tools in my shop but will use power if it is a better way to get the desired result. My wife,Donna,and I live in the woods of Maine with our dogs,cats,and birds. We have 5 grown kids and six grandchildren. Woodcentral has been central to my growth as a woodworker. I pass through this place every day.

Did you buy the plans from Peter? My lathe bed is about 4 inches too short to turn the legs, and I am thinking about the best way to provide an extension.

I did buy the plans from Peter. You could make the legs without a lathe. Start with a square and dimension all four sides with a drawknife. Then remove the corners to create an octagon. Finish with a spokeshave.

Hi Jack,

I think that is very good advice since a lathe modification should not hold up progress. I saw the different leg types included in his plans. I may have to go to the local firewood guy and look at some oak logs. Thanks for your thoughts!
