I'm doing a demo for a wood working club on tool making. Below are some photos of some of the tools I will bring so I can talk about things like shaping the metal, drilling and tapping, restoring, and heat treating. In the first photo I have a Router plane I built using a big allen wrench for the cutter. There is a small plane I use for cleaning up corners and leveling cut off dowels. There is a scratch stock tool for making beads made from a file so I can talk about using files for your tool making stock. Then a few custom carving tools for special projects. The second photos shows some turning tools I play with. This will allow me to talk about drilling a tapping holes along with shaping the steel. The last photo is a custom made hollowing tool for those really hard to reach places.

What, no tools for turning miniature goblets made from sewing needles?!

I'm having trouble imagining the circumstance and use of the special hollowing tool in the last photo.

Where and when is the demo? It sounds like one worth driving to see.

A good friend made a set of turning tool by putting an A-20 collet in a wood handle and attaching pieces of steel for different tasks, i.e., parting tool, skew, etc. Total cost was minuscule. So, being inquisitive, I copied his idea and have a couple of nice tools to do small pieces. I do think the A-20 collets are bulky for what you can hold in place. But, perhaps I am wrong in the sense that I should have gotten some round stock to start with and made the tools from that vice flat steel. Results would be more versatile.

I use R8 collects in some of my handles. You can buy a whole set from 1/4" to 3/4" for about $20.

hand tool side...

not sure if there's enough hand tool traffic here, but lots of us on the hand tool sub forum make our tools.

I think it's fair to say that all woodworkers should be encouraged to make simple tools and sometimes it's faster and easier (and not just cheaper) and opens a lot of options up for you.

Marking knives, open sided grooving planes (look up roubo bouvet, but they can be rough as a cob and still work great, specialty scratching and carving tools for one off purposes. They can all be made without any special tools. Just a good hack saw blade, some files, grinder and a torch.

I bought a chisel plane. Never crossed my mind to glue a block of wood to a plane bade to fill this critical but occasional need.

I guess the block of wood is glued to plane blade?
