OT- Varnishing Cardboard?

What kind of cardboard - corrugated, thin, rough, smooth like poster board, single sheet or laminated?

What kind of strength do you hope for - stiffness, stay flat, bend without breaking?

Does it need to be cardboard or can another material be substituted?

Maybe describe the application, size, etc. and the problems with the untreated cardboard you tried.

Heard from a fellow that he used varnish to add a bit of waterproofing to a bike box when shipping it. He said one of the added benefits was it seemed to strengthen it.
