OT hanging storm door.

Just bought a new house and will be building a new workshop. My problem right now is hanging the storm doors on the house. The moulding they used around the existing door is not flush with the wood. It is aluminum and has been nailed on. The problem is there seems to be about a 3/8" to 1/2" gap between the outer surface and the wood. when you try to put the screws in from the side to hang the storm door trim the screws just go into air. You can probably screw in from the face side of the trim, which you have to do anyway, and just don't pull the screws in enough to bend the metal. doesn't sound like a good idea to me.
the other option is to try and remove this trim and fill the gap with wood. The problem is they used nails with small heads and I thin it will be impossible to get them out without bending and marking up that trim.
anybody have any suggestions. I just paid $300 for these doors and hate to take them back and really would like to have storm doors on the house.
