Anyone used the "Craftsman Radial and Bench Saw Molding Head?

One of the local restoration contractors ask me to help him with about 80 plinth blocks that had a fairly elaborate pattern milled into them. This is all across the grain, and I figured I could combine blades from the above and a pretty good collection of bevel edge shaper knives that Ive ground and acquired over the years. For some reason I'm getting too much tear out on the shaper and having to fall back on a small assortment of knives from the above mentioned set, which is doing a pretty good job on the TS.

I would never even consider using this thing on a radial arm saw, and wondered how they got away with selling them for that use as long as they did. I'm betting there were some serious accidents due to newbie woodworkers thinking this would be a good idea.

If any of you have a set that you'd be willing to part with, I have a box full of shaper cutters ~20 for 1/2" spindle I'd trade. Or without the trade, I'll donate to WC the proceeds.

How soon do you need them?

I am about 99% sure I have a setup for my RAS. I have never used it and it is in a box someplace in my shop or storage area.

The problem is I will not be able to look for them until April 10th. I am in NJ right now then move down to Orlando for the next few weeks.

I don't have a shaper so no worries if I can find it.

(This is not a photo of mine but I think it's the same. I think I even know where mine is!)

I used to use it a lot on the radial arm saw to make molding and picture frames. (I didn't have a table saw.) The idea of the whirling blades was scary but not dangerous with spring-loaded hold-downs and a little common sense. Note that I always used it on long grain, never on cross grain. I also used the carbide toothed adjustable dado a lot with the radial arm saw, in both ripping and crosscuting orientation.

If that's what you are looking for (and I can put my hands on it) you are welcome to it. I don't know if the cutters are sharp since I did use it a lot.

I had forgotten what patterns came with it, because I've changed almost all of them to something else. they are easy to grind, except I can't find my blue dye for marking the new shapes.

I've sent an email. It looks like they may have included different cutters with some of these. Mine, for example, doesn't have the beading cutter.

I have a similar set. I think it's still intact and essentially unused. I also have a number of extra cutters. I would be happy to trade.

Are the shaper cutters the three wing type?

I can look at it tomorrow and give you an inventory.

I can ship them tomorrow or Friday if you want them.

I either sold mine at a garage sale about 19 years ago, or threw them away. I never used them - looked pretty scary to me.

I got your Emails and I have rummaged up the cutter head and 19 sets of cutters. I hope they will go out today and if not today, tomorrow.

I was a little out of touch yesterday. I drove 200 miles round trip to preview the auction of a millwork shop. Fantastic amount of lumber, some of it been in the racks over fifty years. And all of there equipment. (including a set of cutters you were looking for, that drawer full of stuff went for $106, you did not get it.) When I returned I spent the evening bidding. I got two batches, some maple and some walnut. The reason I drove there to preview is I was afraid of Powder Post Beetles. They were well represented in several batches. Hopefully I have avoided them. Going back today to get what I bought.

Do me a favor and block future auctions from my in box. At my age I don't need anymore wood....or do I?
