I am working on a sideboard that is based on this photo:


The top for this piece was a marble slab-I cropped it out of the photo while reformatting the piece for my design.


As I review my design-I drew a very squared off top- I am wondering what sort of edge profile would be appropriate for this piece....

Keep it square with just a slight hand sanded treatment to remove sharp edge?

Round Over?

Ogee Styled profile?

Knowing the specific style would be helpful....Where does the piece in the photo fall on the design spectrum?

French Provincial? Federal ?Sheraton? Newport? ?????

Based on UK period furniture I'd put it vaguely somewhere in the late Sheraton/ early Regency period, i.e., late 18th to early 19th century. Basically, I'd describe it as a side cabinet with short turned legs, round drops and knobs for pulls and its added square blocking at the internal corners of the doors where the panel is held, plus fluted pilasters.

As to an edge moulding for the top panel, I suggest something in keeping with that period might be an ogee, either cyma recta (my preference), or possibly cyma reversa.

Of course, you may prefer to seek design inspiration from your American antique forms, which do vary quite a bit from the UK styles. Slainte.

I'm not near the shop so can't look at the bit but my preference is the bit I used on these two pieces- Can't recall the profile official name-"something like "Classic Ogee"-
