I agree on this one. Sharpening goes hand-in-hand with safety. Dull tools require unnecessary force, which can be dangerous. Not to mention that sharp tools are a pleasure to use and reinforce the tactual pleasures of woodworking.

You might want to start with a fairly simple project that can be completed in a short time. Maybe a toolbox or birdhouse. Something that he can hold up and say "I made this". This will maintain his interest. From there you can introduce a new skill or technique at each additional lesson and move to more complicated and detailed projects.

My 3 year old granddaughter is an experienced woodworker and lets me help her in the shop.

Learn SketchUp or mechanical drawing so that you make your mistakes on paper. The second is the practice of planning the finish early and practicing on scrap and take notes!

Let him build whatever interests him. Guide and review his design. Show him techniques as the project progress. Show him how you could improve what he's done (e.g. visible sanding marks, etc.), but don't do the work for him.
