Don't forget about sanitation and anesthesia. I wonder how the surgical chainsaw was better than saws. It looks like the teeth are sharpened points. They'd chip away more than cut.
The modern chainsaw tooth was inspired by the jaws of wood boring larvae. The story I've read a few times was a logger in Oregon was having lunch and looked down on the log to see a borer. He saw that the mouth pieces shaved off wood rather than chopped it. He went onto form Oregon Saw Chain. Oregon has been my favorite for 40+ years
