Music Stand 2019 Finished (picture heavey)

Alan Young

I had hoped to photograph this piece in a more formal setting but logistics and timing didn't work out so I took these pictures on the most empty wall in our house that I could find!

This stand was completed March 9, 2019. It is made from Cherry with a Black Lacquer finish and shop made Brass Hardware and Detailing.

This Music Stand is a combination of these stands built for the Salmagundi Art Club of New York in 2015

and these Stands built in August 2018 employing a new Desk Angle Adjustment Mechanism.

This is the third stand to employ the use of a Desk Angle Adjustment Mechanism designed by my Dad-Roland Young.

When the lock lever is lowered, the Desk can be rotated 360 degrees or removed from the stand.

When the lock lever is raised, the Desk is locked in place.

The G/F Cleff pin allows the the stand to be altered in working height.

A front activated- spring loaded lever allows the user to shift the angle of music from flat-0 degrees to straight up and down - 90 degrees and three angles in between.

Consider making the fastening hardware, bracket-to-stand, black. I thought all that functional brass distracting from the arty brass rods.

I like the simple post. Leaves the eye directed to the pleasing stand.

My artist friend may have been a bad influence on me. She doesn't like many artistic elements in a piece of furniture. This philosophy has begun to take hold of my design thoughts.

Not against that Idea

Alan Young

You may remember my original adjustment mechanism:

This was a "satisfactory" design but I thought it could be improved functionally-

I think Dad's design improves the functionality-

1. The top is easily removed

2. The Top can be swiveled and locked in 360 degree of movement

3. The top can be locked in 5 rather than 4 positions.

Drawback of this prototype iteration:

1. Form factor is larger than my eye would like. Dad made this prototype from a bunch of random parts he found in his stash. And he made jigs for reproduction based on these initial parts sizes

We were approaching this as a prototype that could be changed as function and aesthetics required. I have enough parts to make 5 or 6 more of these-But if I want to alter the size-new Jigs will need to be fashioned. Dad passed last December-My brother is very capable of remaking new jigs if I want to resize the design.

As to the fastening hardware- Black may be more aesthetically pleasing. Painting/Lacquering the hardware should work- But Powder coated hardware would probably prove more durable...

Really nice, Alan

You are an artist *and* a mechanic. These designs are great. How did you get in with the Salmagundi Club anyhow?

Good work. Thanks for posting.

How did you get in with the Salmagundi Club anyhow?

It was a Sunday afternoon and I was relaxing on my front porch when my cell phone rang-I looked at the number- I didn't recognize it and almost didn't answer- It was a gentleman who was a member of the Salgamundi Club. He had just donated a new Shigeru Kawai semi-concert grand Piano for the Club. (see link) He wanted to commission a pair of stands to go with the piano. We talked a bit then began exchanging e-mails and finalized the arrangement. He must have found my webpage because I had no other contact with the Club to that point. They use the Stands for Concerts in a Gallery and as Display Supports for Posters etc.

I don't like commenting on visual....but

I really like the brass bars, clef, latches, and on feet, but for the future, consider toning down the the castle nuts on the stand tilt mechanism. These face the audience and I find them slightly distracting. Also have the musicians mentioned anything about having a raised ledge or a pop up lever on the horizontal piece to keep the music pages from flipping unexpectedly with the prospect of fan air or air conditioning?

These stands look great together with the piano. Nice work.

Gary-I am in some agreement with you. The design dynamic in working with my Dad was interesting-He always approached his work from a mechanical problem to be solved. He also had a good eye for aesthetics-in this case we didn't get to work together for a second iteration-As I mentioned somewhere in an earlier comment this was a prototype-I am very happy with the functionality of the design. I would like the form factor to be @ 80% smaller-this would possibly mean that the interior gearing may go back to a four position rather than five position adjustment. Dad was "really happy" to have found those brass acorn nuts- But a new iteration would probably be better if the mounting hardware and the bracket were of the same material/tone color-perhaps the bracket can be made slightly smaller and in brass?

I did implement a brass bar along the horizontal ledge on the design for the Salgamundi stands.

I left them off the last two iterations. I've had no comments either way...

Don't the nuts protect the user's hands ?

Kneale Brownson

They would not appreciate having bolt threads cut their fingers.
