But these 1# concentrations must be applied with a "rubber" for best results. In fact several coats rubbed on will yield an exceptional result. French furniture makers often used this approach and others copied it. The result is widely considered the basis for the very best finish.

Bill, two questions:

1. Do you sand those washcoats, between coats and after the final one, or just let them be?

2. Does this method work if you brush or wipe on the stain or dye?

I usually only use one coat myself. That seems to do the trick.

Tom a washcoat or seal coat is usually one coat. I use shellac almost exclusively and I brush on a 1 1/2 pound cut, sand with 220 or 320 and then go on with the rest of the finishing stages. I could see possibly needing two coats if the piece was stained and you were concerned about cutting through to the color layer.
