Finishing up another Music Stand

I've been off the boards for awhile-busy on a couple of projects but no time to post progress shots-Last May my Dad finished a new design for a Desk Angle Adjustment Mechanism. I used it on these two stands completed last June.

The design features a front activated- spring loaded lever that allows the use to shift the angle of music from flat-0 degress to straight up and down - 90 degrees and three angles in between.

Before has passed last December he finished several of these mechanisms.

I am finishing work on a new stand that employs the new mechanism but the more formal tripod base. I tried a new finish schedule-Using Black Dog Salvage Furniture Paint-

I followed this with a Gloss Black Lacquer and then Clear Gloss Lacquer from Rust Oleum.

I have a couple more details to polish up for this stand then will take formal pictures in a better setting.

I’m a fairly spry 82-year-old who had been a reader/participant at WoodCentral since the demise of Badger Pond. I started visiting BP to learn something about finish for a project I’d completed and became hooked on internet forums as a way of increasing my knowledge about all sorts of topics. I have been a moderator for a couple other forums on subjects I enjoy. My interest in woodworking began in the early 1970’s when my wife and I had contractors add to our house near Traverse City, MI, and I ended up doing the trim work to reduce mounting costs. I had no tools. I bought a P-C skilsaw, hammer, screwdrivers and one of those wooden miter boxes with a backsaw. I made trim for windows and doors from one-by lumber and started my woodworking career. At the same time, I started a 50-year career as a ski instructor. I got onto the night shift at a mental hospital so I could ski days, and spent my 30s and 40s with that schedule. I eventually replaced the PC-upside-down-in-a-board with a real table saw and began the purchase of enough equipment to fill a jam-packed 40-foot shipping container we used after we sold our property in Michigan. The ski instructing had taken us to Colorado and we were spending too much on maintaining utilities for two homes. A couple years ago, the dozen years spent at 10,000 feet of elevation was making my body produce too many red blood cells, so we had to leave my “forever” home in the mountains and we moved back to Michigan. Now I have to find myself a shop space for all those tools in the container.

I don't understand the finishing schedule. Matte black paint, covered by gloss black lacquer, covered by glass clear lacquer. When I've wanted something black, I've sprayed any black paint, then topcoated with clear lacquer. Turns out great. I would skip the black lacquer.

My recollection of Rust-o-leum rattle cans is that they come with the cheap/standard cone nozzle. I usually go to the automotive section of my local Canadian Tire (a hardware store that supplied both hardware and automotive products), and pick a rattle can that comes with a fancy spray nozzle (the EZ Touch 360 Nozzle). These nozzles provide an excellent spray pattern.

For small jobs I've often used the Dupli-colour automotive paint and clear coat. It really stinks and the finish can be plastic if applied too thick, but it comes with the nice application nozzle and I've yet to have a problem with it: http://www.finescale.com/online-extras/how-to/2002/11/using-automotive-paint-on-your-models

You can completely finish a project like the music stand in a matter of hours using this stuff. Two coats of black. Light sand. Two coats of clear and you're done.

You just have to leave the windows of your shop open for a week to get rid of the smell.

The Matte Paint from Black Dog is a great product for this application-It goes on evenly dries-quickly and then I can level it-I then applied Gloss Back-Which is fine as I only apply the Black to the wooden sections-Once all the Brass is assembled I then top coat the entire unit with the clear Gloss.

Proposing a contest

Post pictures of all your music stands and ask participants to find the two that are identical..... you could double post one picture for the contest . I prefer the simple post on #3 but can't decide a favorite on the tops.

I'll be posting finished pics of this piece later- My stands have evolved over time-as most designs do-for practical and aesthetic reasons. "Aesthetic" is of course subjective and doesn't necessarily mean improvement
