Riser Block for old Jet band sw

Robert Loewenthal

Hi. I wondering if anyone has tried installing a modern day jet Riser block on an old model, Jet JBS-14. When I contacted Jet tech support they said there are no riser blocks available for this machine. I have not disassembled it yet, but I think it has a 3/4" bolt attachment.

I have found Riser blocks , but cannot confirm if they will work with my old model. Most say they are for newer models. Thanks for the reply

Maybe you already know this, but the reason they might not work is because of alignment dowels in the joint besides the big bolt. Prevents any rotation in the joint.

I was wondering if I might have to remachine for the pins. Hoping someone has given this a try already.

If I remember correctly the pins are not that important, you can grind them off if needed.

In addition to the riser block, the kit for my 14" Delta came with other things that may be needed, especially the adjustable support for the upper blade guides, without which you might not be able to lower the guides to close to the table.

I can't be sure that the previous riser I posted earlier includes all the guards and blade guides. This one clearly does, although I have no idea what the circular band is.

Robert, without meaning to be a Killjoy, are you certain that I higher frame will be stiff enough to deal with the tensioning needed to re-saw taller boards?

I recall having a 14" Taiwanese bandsaw, to which I added a dedicated block to increase the re-saw height. It certainly did this, but the bandsaw still could only handle a 1/2" wide blade. It could not add more tension than before, and the feed to work this new combination became impossibly slow. When I could find the funds, I upgraded the bandsaw.

Thanks for reply Derek. That is certainly something to consider. I am new to resawing, hoping to turn some fruit trees into usable boards. A learning experience, but not ready to put a lot of money into it.

I got a Delta 14" bandsaw. New. Added a riser block. A device for taking the tension off the blade. And Carter guides. Upgraded the spring. Improved the dust collection. It still won't handle anything over a half inch blade. I think I would have been better off to buy a bigger more powerful dedicated resaw and leave the little one for everything else. I can and have resawed many things, but I'm just sayin".

some things to consider

Thanks for reply Derek. That is certainly something to consider. I am new to resawing, hoping to turn some fruit trees into usable boards. A learning experience, but not ready to put a lot of money into it.

Robert, you can in fact resaw with these 14" riser saws, I used mine for years both for occasional resawing and a lot for cutting green log sections into woodturning blanks. I once resawed a 12' douglas fir 2x12 into four boards for a friend and it was very slow.

Cutting big green wood pieces into turning blanks was quicker but not at all difficult with some patience. After trying several blades, some too big for that saw regardless of what the mfgr said, I settled on 1/2"x3tpi Lenox blades. When I got an 18" Rikon cutting was much easier and quicker but I still use the same blade. Using a 1/2"x4tpi blade gives a smoother cut but is a bit slower.

Tensioning is critical and unless right resawing or cutting thick green wood is difficult or impossible. I use a tension gage to get it right but there are cheaper ways. I don't trust the flutter and other methods. The tension indicator on any bandsaw I've checked is worthless - if you mount a 1/2" blade and set it to what the mfgr says it is almost guaranteed to be under-tensioned. Trying to use a wider blade on these saws is likely to damage some components trying to get the tension high enough. I did that to my 14" Delta and had to buy beefed up aftermarket parts to make it right again. (From Iturra Design)

Properly tuning the saw is also important. I had to add shims to align the small saw. The 18" saw has a much easier way built in.

To cut a green log section into usable boards may take some additional set up and some help. Anything longer than about 2 or 3' may need a good outfeed table even with a larger saw. The trunion of the small bandsaw itself may have trouble with a heavy log section. (a 3' cherry log 12" in diameter weighs over 120 lbs) I cut round logs by first cutting down the middle then trimming and slicing to get turning blanks. But to cut boards you may have to build a sled with log clamps or go through a lot of gyrations to cut safely without dangerous unsupported cuts.

All in all it would be a lot simpler to take the logs to someone with a small sawmill to slice them up into boards. That is SO much easier, especially as with larger diameters. (I have a Woodmizer behind the barn for such things.) You will still have to deal with the stickering, drying, insects, loss from checking/cracking, storage space and time to dry, and in the end may not get much useful lumber from small logs. I hate to mess with sawing boards from logs smaller than about 15", 24" is better.

Thank you John. That is a lot of great information. I think I will make the attempt and install the riser block. It may in fact turn out to be way more effort than it is worth.

John is right all the way around and I second everything he said.

I looked on amazon and want to warn you to look closely. They seemed to have a riser block as one item and a riser kit as another item. The kit includes a longer blade and the items to extend the guard and post for the guides down to the table. You need and want those additional parts.

Enjoy. I did and still do occasionally.
