A few years ago I had a small storage building built in my back yard. a couple of 4 ft. fluorescent was put up.
The bulbs need replacing which are just the regular bulb and I want to replace them with T8 bulb's. Bulbs are the same size so no problem there. Question is will the chepo fixture power the T8 bulbs ok or do I need to change the whole fixture.

What lamp is in there now? A T12? If a T12 you can't power a T8 lamp with a T12 ballast. You need to replace ballast and lamp.
If you need to replace the ballast and buy T8 lamps you should consider replacing the fixture with an LED of some quality, the quality depending on what you are lighting. Cheap LED light can be had for $20 and quality light for $50.
If the fixture is a strip fixture, definitely replace with LED.
The data to make the best choice are in recent lighting discussions in the last couple of months.

T12 is what I have so I will replace the fixture.

You can buy replacement LED bulbs that do not use a ballast. You have to wire around the ballast and replace the "tombstones" and just install the new bulbs. Rather than go through that I would buy LED fixtures.

Ben If I`m not to late go to 1000 bulbs.com and you will find bulbs that you just put in the LED BULB RIGHT IN THE FIXTURE WITHOUT HAVEING TO REWIRE. I`M Going to get a few and try them. Larry

I just replaced eight 4 foot old florescent bulbs in my farm shop with cheap daylight led tubes from Walmart, $8.98 for a pair as I recall. No wiring, no ballast changes, no nothing, just popped them in and they work great with a ton of bright light and instant on.
