Shot through the heart.....err...Pants.....

Barry Irby

I was cutting some tiny rabbets in the edges of thin walnut boards on my TS. They were 3/32" by 3/32", leaving a tiny off cut less than a 1/16" square. The little slivers were shooting back at me. Most of the time I was letting them shoot past my hip back into the floor behind me. One of them hit me and the little arrow went through my pants, shirt tail and under-roos and pricked me. Didn't really hurt, but I was amazed. I guess the less is to stay out of the way or wear Norm's apron.

Screw a block of MDF on your fence and raise it up 1/4" from the table, you won't get shot anymore.

There have been people speared and even killed by with cut-offs shooting back. The case of the fatality I believe was a teacher doing a demo when it happened.

Can't be too careful.

There was an article a couple of years ago about a guy in an industrial setting who had a kickback on a tablesaw. The offcut hit him in the groin area and severed his femoral artery. He sat down, leaned against a steel column behind the saw and bled to death before anyone found him.

You can just put the block of MDF in your skivvies.

In 60 some years of woodworking, I have only had one accident. I was ripping a piece of cherry about 3/4 x3/4 18 inches long, and I always make it a point to push the piece well beyond the saw blade. Suddenly, the piece came rocketing back and hit me in the abdomen so hard it almost knocked me down. Fortunately I was wearing my leather shop apron. I looked and instantly I had a bruise the size of a softball. I firmly believe that it would have penetrated me had I not been wearing the apron. To this day I don't know what caused the kickback, but it made me even more careful than I was before. I never work in the shop without the leather apron.
