That's a neat idea...

I like it a lot better than the typical futon that seems to fill a similar niche, but I would worry about durability. Inventive thinking though, gotta give them that.

I wonder if it was engineered by somebody who won one of those "build a bridge from cardboard that you can put 2,000 pounds on before it collapses" challenges?

Could be. I remember watching a video years ago of a large truck driving over a cardboard bridge and it was impressive, especially since somebody had enough confidence to stand underneath it while it passed overhead.

There's a lady near Taos, NM who makes furniture from laminated cardboard with joinery including dovetails and mortise and tenon. She finishes with lacquer. She makes chairs, tables, etc. She would laminated corrugated cardboard together to get to 8/4 thickness.

I am embarrassingly close to 300 lbs and sat on one of her chairs. It was solid with no give at all, could have been wood for all you could tell.

The Gougeons made some really cool, and very competitive sailboats. One of their favourite materials was that cellular cardboard core material. Might be Nomex Honeycomb. The stuff is surreal light. They would make decks out of two layers of 1/8" plywood bagged over the cardboard core. Samples feel like you are holding nothing, but it feels like walking on cardboard.

I guess wasps are the masters of paper structures.
