Count yourself lucky.

One local source lists 6/4 walnut @ $10.50 with no 8/4.

Cherry 6/4 @ $7.50 and 8/4 @ $8.50.

My preferred yard has no web listed prices but is usually a buck or two cheaper.

that price is too low for retail top grade, way too low for 12/4.

Why would you be shocked? A quality walnut veneer log will bring more than that price. It takes a large tree to yield the upper grades of 8 and 12/4 lumber. Seen any large walnut trees lately with no irregularities in the bark that would indicate healed knots within?

I am looking at a pile of Stuff the guy's father bought in the 70's. Have not seen it in person so I don't know the grade.

Come to think of it, the last time I bought any was probably in the 70's

That's not bad at all. Last time I was at my usual yard (a commercial supplier) I was quoted $9.40 bdft for 8/4, and when I looked at the wood none of it was anything I could use - too much sap and all on a flat instead of an edge. The guy in the office told me they were bringing in 70/30 lately, apparently the cabinet trade doesn't mind that.

Next time I buy walnut, I'll probably have to go up to Santa Fe and hope the supplier there is bringing in better stuff at twice the price!

Man, I should have bought a unit of it about 6 years ago when I paid $5 bdft for nice wood.

Until a person cuts up logs...

Hey Barry,

If you make it to the RATS meeting in Feb I will put you in contact with Allen Weber. He usually has Walnut and Cherry at decent prices. Do you want me to make arrangements for him to bring some to the meeting for you to look at?

I am not sure about the Rats meeting, but I am trying to talk myself into it.

I bought the lumber I was talking about last night. A pickup load. The guy gave me a decent price on it. His father was the wood worker and has aged out, at 93 he is no longer wood working.

The pile was a little mixed. Some pieces were cherry and one or two were oak. It was a barn find back in the 70's and had accumulated dust and detritus. He was fair on his measurements. He rounded down substantially, discounting split ends and other significant defects. He threw in about a dozen 4/4 boards that were badly stained and generally useless. There are a few bug holes. It got to the point I was just cleaning out the shop, but so far I am pretty happy with the load.

Any body got a good idea for what to do with horrible looking walnut? Bed slats?

Really pay attention Barry, you may have brought home some active powder post beetle issues. They love barn stored lumber. I threw away a couple truck loads. Mostly soft maple, but I’ve never seen such damage!

At a lumber place I recently discovered near Cleveland (N. Ridgeville):

Walnut = $8.50 B/F

Cherry = $5.50 B/F

It's shown as Straight line rip one edge, random width, hit skip.

They bring out pallets of wood and let you pick through and take the boards you want. They even help and help re-stack it.

John, last time I went to Alpine in Santa Fe they had a wide selection of walnut. I didn't look into price as I went for cherry.

Unfortunately, they had almost no 8/4 cherry as they said "there's no demand for it" - though I suspect what they meant was that its selling so cheap now that they can't make their usual exorbitant profit.

Try Rugby in Albuquerque, if anyone has the cherry it will be them. If there is not a lot of demand you may have better luck than I did with the walnut. I can't remember if you told me once you'd been there, might have been Merle. I bought a really nice 8/4 board at that retail place before they closed, it was pretty cheap then too... prices are probably still low if the demand is, I ought to get to town and stock up.

is in the $15 bd/ft range here. I haven't seen pieces suitable for turning at 12/4, but too narrow or shot to be boards, but that's usually sold at billet price and not cheap, either.

For every seemingly high lumber cost, there's 10 landowners here who think the walnut tree that they have in their front yard is going to pay the cost of removal plus $25K .

#1 common cherry 5/4 here is about $3 a board foot, and FAS is $5. The retail price at a supply store (that sells retail but specializes in contractors) is probably a little higher, presumably discounted then to contractors. They have coin sorted boards (all the same width, never the same color) that I don't find much favor in, but they're good for someone making trim, I guess.

Through and through cut lumber 8/4 in full boards with live edge brings more.

The only thing really cheap here is poplar and red oak.
