Folks, we outlived our chat provider recently, and I've hooked us up with a new outfit that seems to cater to a crowd about 40 years younger, but the software is pretty interesting and has some possibilities (image and video uploading, private messaging, possible whiteboard) I'm hoping to delve into. But, we need to decide whether there are enough people here to actually populate a 25-user board, to make it worth our while. The trial board I've uploaded accepts only five users, which frankly is enough to handle the small groups we've been hosting for quite a while now.

Anyhow, the room is open 24/7 for your perusal. Out schedule is still Mon, Tues and Wed nights at 9:30 Eastern Time. I wouldn't worry too much about crossover content -- general woodworking, hand tools, turning -- because we're all mostly there to chat. But I do think the possibilities could be interesting.

Hope to see you there and to work through any issues with the design and/or functioning of the new app. But stop by anytime to kick the tires.

Hi again folks,

I have now configured the chat room to make it more user friendly. Have another look. To sign in, click in the text box at the bottom of the screen and choose a username, password and email address. If you have an image you would like to add as an avatar, and it has a URL, you can paste a link to it in the image test box.

We may have to register for the deluxe chat room in order for you to upload an avatar image directly from your computer.

There are features in this new chatroom that I think may be game-changers for a lot of people who are tired of the old text-only format, including image and video uploading, personal messaging and other good stuff. I've only begun to explore the options, but imagine joining another member there to work out design details, show photos of work in progress, give a virtual shop tour or other cool idea.

When we first started chatting twenty years ago (actually, I was running the AOL woodworking chatroom in '94, so it's 25 years for me), the bandwidth was so low that none of this was possible. It may be time to join the rest of the online world.

See what you think of the look and feel of the chat, and let me know if you think you'd avail yourself of this opportunity. Meanwhile, we'll move along with the limited trial version we have now.
