I Just added the counter weight to my DP

I had some 5 lb ingots of lead and I bought some 1/16" cable and a pulley. Hung the pulley for the bottom of the upper housing, wrapped the cable around the bolt that holds the table and attached 20 lbs of lead. Drilled through the center of the lead.

I cleaned and waxed the column with paste wax. With one whole minute of use under my belt I can say I am pleased. Pretty much got neutral buoyancy. Very pleasant to adjust.

I recommend this upgrade if you don't have something similar.

C & C welcome.

Sounds good. I have been thinking about building an extension for the crank so I can use a drill to raise/lower. I have a large table on mine and that makes it hard to reach the crank handle. There is a YouTube video that shows construction of an extension using #35 sprocket and chain. A counterweight would help that as well.

I built my wife an easel with a counterweight. She is 4'11" and able to raise/lower the whole affair with ease. Turns out, two 2005 350Z brake rotors were just the correct weight! I encased them in a cherry box for aesthetics. I bet the drill press table would require a hair more weight than that!

Also working on a mobile base for the drill press. I like the Woodsmith Shop design.

a hand wheel for the half inch bolt that locks the table. Right now I am using a wrench. Found some, but having a hard time finding one that is threaded for a half Inch bolt.
