I just screwed myself

I just screwed myself

Thomas Skaggs, Foothills of Mount Level

Pictured is $420 worth of screws that just arrived. Being a one man studio furniture maker I don't go through screws at a very fast pace. I have typically ordered them in 100 count of various types and sizes. Taking inventory of fasteners is a small but un-liked chore. But oh to have a dollar for every time I find myself in a pinch needing something like 8 screws of a certain size and only having 6.

I typically place orders when I have several sizes to order. It then makes my efforts more efficient. But there is nothing efficient about running across town to the big box to buy a small quantity of screws. The other problem is that the screws sold at big box stores are garbage (IMHO).

So, another inventory and order day came. It is no mystery that the larger the quantity you order, the cheaper the unit cost is. I decided to bite the bullet and order fasteners in the 1,000 count boxes.

I mentioned to my wife that I just spent $420 on screws. She wanted to know if they were made out of gold. I then explained and demonstrated the long term savings. All was well and she was reassured that I had not lost my mind. But then came the inevitable moment when this was mentioned to other family. Thus started a litany of screw jokes. "$420....do you have a screw loose?" "Have you been in the shop screwing around?" "Sounds like you royally screwed yourself!" and of course...."I knew there was something screwy about you."

Proof once again that no good deed goes unpunished.

I don't recognize the boxes. Where did you order from?

I'm always on the alert for "good" screws (Fasteners)

I am thankful this was not what I thought. I was afraid you had driven one into yourself. BTDT, Never good

I was just considering buying to 500 count boxes. Thanks for the validation.

I am in sympathy

I did the same in 100 box lots. Now if I need a #4 screw of some length I have it. Where do you order from?

I have been satisfied with Lee Valley brass screws.

I used to get my screws from McFeely's. But now I use Quickscrews. Their screws are well made. I usually use square drive screws. I like their black phosphate/wax coated screws. I have had no issues with messed up orders or customer service with them. (so far).

I did a comparison and they were cheaper than McFeely's.

I wish I could budget that amount for one purchase! My Dad made me this little item last summer- It is incredibly handy-I havn't labeled the plastic jars yet but I know when I am getting low on a certain nail, screw ,washer etc...

Fastener-oholics

You are my new role model. Ignore the clueless plebeians. When I want to make or fix something I want to do it right now, 2 AM, Christmas day, when ever.

I keep a hardware store in my shop too, with wood screws and nails, machine screws, lag screws, screw eyes, sheet metal screws, carriage bolts, socket screws, self-drilling, Strongtie, concrete, deck screws, plastic, metric, nylock, steel, stainless, brass... Don't forget washers, nuts, inserts.

I don't buy in 1000 piece boxes but it still adds up. Last week I 'bout panicked when down to my last half dozen 5/16"x18 set screws so I ordered another box.

(And for those especially neurotic about not having the right fastener on hand: There is a scrap yard/metal recycling place near here with a building full of mostly sorted hardware. They sell at scrap metal prices so I always grab a bag full for the Miscellaneous drawer. I have little self control. Someday I'll really really need that 4' length of 1" diameter acme threaded rod.)

I like this site but have been buying mostly Machine Screws from them. They have a lot of more than just screws and great customer service.

I hear ya about the big boxes. This weekend I was trying to hang some cabinet doors to finish a project. Ran out of the screw size I needed. Found some at the orange box. Even with proper pilot and shank holes predrilled and waxed, one out of three broke off.

Ordered proper screws and will replace all the crap screws when they come in.

I have boxes and boxes and boxes of screws, but still fall short on what I really need.

ARRRGGGHH!

Better quality and cheaper.

I build orbs out wine barrel hoops, at Pretzel Depot it costed me a little over $4 for the hardware. When I order it from Bolt Depot (Link Above) it's just under a $1.

Thanks for the forecast: Clearly now they will invent an improved screw and we will all have to get them, and new drivers. :)
