The requirement is to be able to readily tuck the sheet in. There might be some difference in opinion on the requirement. For the beds I have made 1" total is more than I allowed. However, something 1" would seem acceptable.

One inch sounds fine if your mattress is on top of a box spring unit. If not, you may want a little more space to make getting the bottom sheet on easier.

Almost any delta will work well for some given value of well. Just don't forget that the further some hard bit sticks out the more likely someone will be cursing and jumping up and down in the dark with a bashed shin.

I Just finished a platform bed for a queen mattress. Will there be low sides the come up from the platform? The one I just built has an applied edge that comes up about an inch. If there will be low sides then 1-2inches of extra width is fine. You can lift the mattress up to get the fitted sheet on. A blanket or comforter in winter will cover up the gap. If you are going to have sides that will up much higher from the platform then you may need to give it some extra room.

Of the half dozen platforms for single/queen/king I've made, they are all sized to the mattress sizes. No problem with sheets or shins.

Dave, I made a queen-sized bed with raised sides a year or so ago and have found a 1-inch clearance on all sides worked well. The final clearance at the foot end ends up being closer to 2 inches as the mattress is pushed closer to the head board and nothing other than a fitted sheet/mattress protector etc. gets tucked in there anyway. The resulting 2-inch foot clearance provides extra space for tucking in blankets/comforters/duvets etc. Have fun. Jim

My son and I made one for him. Platform bed with drawers under it. The drawer fronts were about an inch above the platform and the platform was the same width as the foam mattress. The problem was the mattress pooched out on the sides and pushed the drawers open and they were annoying and unsightly. Cut the drawer fronts down to even with the platform and the problem was solved.

So, the platform is the same width as the mattress and about 2" longer.

I have never made a bed that did not involve a box spring. In your case the frame needs to accommodate what ever sheet arrangement you will use over the mattress, including getting it on and off. You can mock something up to make this determination. I would think 3/4" on each side is reasonable for a fitted sheet.
