Need painting advice

Clementine

I have a concrete storm shelter with an inside entrance. It has never been painted, but I think it would be easier to keep clean if it were painted, maybe with a high gloss paint. It is a little damp, but not overly so since I’m in the Texas Panhandle. What would you recommend for sealer, primer and paint?

I don't remember the product name. It was a material that came in a bag, was mixed with water and painted on our cement block. It provides a moisture barrier as well as it is white. Painted white, the inside will look vastly brighter.

Go to where builders buy masonry supplies and ask for product specifics.

Oh, my darlin'...

You'd be taking a non-maintenance item and turning it into a maintenance item. Paint on wet/damp concrete will fail, it's just a question of when. That said, there are some options. You can get a product like DryLok (stinky), or a concrete stain. I've been out of the painting business for a few years now, so I'm not up on the latest, but those products have been around for years. Best bet would be to go to a paint store such as Sherwin-Williams or ICI/Glidden and get advice there. Don't get advice at the big box stores. Even at the paint stores, it's best if you can talk to a manager, as there is often higher turnover among the associates so they may have barely learned to mix a color...

suggest that the advice source could be masonry supply store for block sealant.

Painting the interior, exterior, or both?

Interior. It has a room built on top of it, so nothing shows of the exterior.

We have a Sherwin-Williams. I'll check with them also.

Just a word of caution

Ian Neuhaus

you may be advised to use some sort of epoxy or solvent based paint.

Just be sure to wear an appropriate respirator if working in a confined space with such products. And to completely ventilate the space before using it.
