A friend is selling a box of old tools. One of them is a UNION plane 14" long. There is some relatively superficial rust. The knob is missing. The body of the plane lacks any markings. The word Union is cast into the Cap Iron and there is information stamped into the iron.
I have looked on the internet and found some information.
I am interesting in setting up a shooting board. Would this be a good plane for that? Is there collector value? Should I just make a front knob or try to hunt down an original? Can anyone tell me more, like is this a NO. Five?
Thanks Jack. I was actually thinking it might be a little light for a shooting board. But then, what do I know? I suspect I will be able to get both planes pretty reasonably, so if I can I will and learn by doing. I have recently improved my sharpening techniques, so I think that will pay off.
If you are starting down that slippery slope, why don't you attend the next RATS (Richmond Antique Tool Society) meeting. It will be in February. I don't see the date on the web site, but it will be on a Friday night at Pocahontas Middle School. If interested let me know and I will get you the details. You can come as my guest. Lots of knowledge there and usually a fair number of tools for sale with good prices if you like to bargain.
Mike and I have met. Actually I sold him some of my auction finds. that must have gone well enough as he is still speaking to me here. And you are correct, he is quite the craftsman.
