Does anyone have the Battery  Stihl Chainsaw?

Barry Irby

I am seeing Christmas ads for a Battery powered chainsaw for $300. Anybody got one or tried one? I have a gas powered Stihl and like it. The battery version is appealing for ease of use, lack of gas, quiet, etc. If anyone cares I am thinking of putting one on my Wish List.

No cordless Stihl, but with three gas powered and one corded electric Stihl I i wouldn't hesitate to buy their cordless based on their reputation if the specs looked useful. I'm very satisfied with all of them including the corded version - it has plenty of power. I use it quite a bit just outside and inside the shop. But I would first compare the specs to the corded model to get an idea of the relative amount of power since I hate surprises.

One thing that concerns me - the bar lengths are 10-12" which is very short. My corded electric is 16 or 18" (can't remember) which lets me cut nearly anything I need. A bar length of 10" sounds like it might be a pretty wimpy saw, perhaps only useful for very small trees and limbs. Ok if that's your intent.

Another thing that concerns me is some of the larger saws have extremely short run times with some of the batteries. That would make me want a second battery. While that may fit the need, I would first want to know how much each battery is. 36 volt LiIon batteries from Stihl might be pricey. (What if they want another $300 for a second battery?) Have to call one of the dealers to see.

Which model was for $300? MSA 120, 140, 160 or 200?

I would also have to decide if I really wanted to mess with another brand of battery and charger. Most of what I have now use the same batteries and I like it that way.

Hi

I’ve never used the Stihl. I ran the Husky for a little while. I did buy a Deqlt for $150 because it uses the same batteries as my other tools

All of the battery chainsaws are getting good user reviews. Never expect them to compete with a Stihl 200 though.

A friend and I host Treebuzz.com. It’s a forum directed more to pro arborists than homeowners. We have two forums where you might find info about battery saws. One is ‘Chainsaws’...no surprise. The other is ‘Rant and Rave’. You might be able to read but if you register you can see everything. We do NOT spam or market any info

Pros are really liking them for pruning. A battery will last about the equivalent of a tank of gas. They are a little slower to cut than gassers

Real pluses are no hearing protection needed and no more recoils to pull. Most arbos have sore left shoulders from a lifetime of yanking recoils

Yikes, have I've been doing it wrong all these years? I put the saw on the ground, hold with my right foot and left hand, then pull with my right hand. I guess this wouldn't work in a tree, bucket, or ladder though...

I've gotten spoiled by the recoil starter on my second Stihl 250. It has that old man's starter where you pull the rope several times to wind up a spring and when wound enough it engages internally and turns over the motor. I started using it years ago after shoulder surgery since it is so much easier to start.

Besides the corded electric instant start and low noise, I like that it's not running constantly between cuts, and the absence of exhaust fumes.

Saw starting

Tom Dunlap

Yup..you're right. Ground starting or 'crotching' the saw is advised. Drop starting isn't. In the tree or bucket there's a different technique. Stiff-arm the saw with the right hand. Pull the recoil with the left. The saw doesn't move. Safer..but still rough on left shoulders after a lifetime. I started climbing with a Mac 6 in about '74...now I'll use my Dewalt...quite a set of career brackets

I have the battery powered Stihl. Like it a lot. Only a 12" bar, and a 'special' chain that's narrower than the gas models - maybe 3/16". For limbing, or cutting stuff around 8" or less, it's great.

Battery life is amazingly long, too. Stihl says it'll do 100 4" cuts per charge, and I believe it. I've made a couple dozen cuts in 8"+ red oak, and still had plenty of battery left.

I've also used it for brush cutting, and I ran out of energy before the battery did.

I'd buy it again, for sure.
