One thing I find curious about this place is the fact that there is a single message option, and it is the default. This is often inconvenient to me when I check in from a different computer, or when I nuke my cookies. I notice now that some threads or maybe all of them have a tool to change this display option in threads. Is this new? Who uses, and how, the single message mode? Why would it ever be the default?

Tom, I personally use the guestbook mode, although the single message option is the default, as you noted. I'm pretty sure there's a way for me to change the default display mode, but I never have tried. If you register a profile, our system sets a cookie that remembers your preferred display mode, so you don't have to change it on every messageboard and computer (or device) you use.
In the old days, some people resisted registering because of presumed spam bots that would vacuum up addresses and bother you forever. Those days have effectively passed, as our developers built in a lot of safeguards about 8 years ago. Maybe it's time to register. Text formatting and file uploading are two additional benefits.

I still would have to log in right? And with multiple devices etc... I still find the current system better for me, and more direct except for the single message thing. I know I am a bit of an outlier on how I use the place, and probably nobody much cares. But on the other hand I was really wondering if people in droves actually prefer the single message option, and therefor what am I missing.
As always, this is the best board on the internet, format wise, and I have no desire to change anything from the sidelines. But after all the years, I just couldn't resist asking.

I use the single message option as it turns the messages a different color after I read them.
