They are more than likely using an autodialer not the phone book.

They just program the dialer (computer) to dial (area code) then a know exchange like 555 then 0001 then 0002 then 0003 an so forth.

We are getting a lot of them on our cells also, when it first came out we signed up for the "do not call list" but I think that had time limit on it.

Anyone know and how to reach them?

NoMoRobo is quite useful but only if your telephone provider is compatible. On landlines it is free to use. Probably worth a look.

When the robo calls first began, I signed cup for the Do Not Call list. The calls continued, so I made a written complaint to the Do Not Call people. After several months (so long I had completely forgotten about my complaint) I got a letter from them politely expressing their regret and explaining that they had no enforcement authority and could do nothing to stop the calls or punish the callers. It will take Congressional legislation with big teeth to stop this nuisance.

Also, you have to supply the numbers you want to block. It doesn't automatically block robo calls.

I believe all Comcast "land lines" are really Voip. I have one and I am going to try the suggestion posted!

NoMoRoBo works on my Verizon land (FIOS, a.k.a. FITL) line. It doesn't stop all the robo calls, but zaps most of them.

i have NoMoRobo, and don't have to supply numbers to be blocked. It blocks all numbers in their database. If you do receive a call that wasn't blocked, you can go online to their site and add the number that got through.

The Do Not Call List is still there, but the 'robos' have gotten a lot more sophisticated and expensive to stop.

1. Many of them are overseas, even if it looks like a local call.

2. Switching System Seven, used by all the phone companies, was designed when there were only a few, mainly regional components of Bell Telephone and security was barely considered. It is easy to hack. A robo call comes in on a made up phone number. If you block it, they just use a different one next time.

3. Voice-Over-IP makes the calls very cheap, easy to enter the Robo 'business.'

4. FCC recently prosecuted a few big cases and won, but it took years of work and millions of bucks to do that. They are overwhelmed.

I suspect it you answer and then "Press 2 to be removed from out list" they just hand off your number to a different list because they know that somebody answers that phone.

I used to ignore calls from oddball numbers and occasionally somebody would leave a message. If I wanted to, I called them back. Now the calls come from numbers extremely similar to mine or my friends. Even had one come in form a friends number and my phone identified the call as being from Jim.

I'm retired. If I have nothing else to do, I sometimes string them along. Kept one on the phone for twenty-three minutes once. They waste my time, I waste theirs.
