Any body made/have a "river" table?

Any body made/have a "river" table?

Barry Irby

I see a lot of Youtuber's making river tables. Table with strip of Epoxy or other clear resin filler poured down the center. Some have Shells or other things included in the filler. Some are the size of a dining room table. Some are waterfall design.

My question is, Do they hold up? I suspect the joint between the wood and filler will fall over time due to movement in the wood.

So has anybody observed one that is older?

They'll all end up out at the curb or seized and destroyed for trademark infringement before they fail. :D

I briefly considered it for my dining room table but lost my nerve. I did have an idea for one different design: instead of epoxy or whatever down the middle it would have 1/2" plate glass fitting into dadoes on both pieces to fill the gap albeit not flush like resin would have been. It could have glass fitted to rebates instead of dadoes achieving flush fit but the fitting would have been even more of a nightmare. In any case I didn't follow through so it doesn't matter...

I have seen a number of them made with a strip of smokey glass down the middle cut to a serpentine pattern that fits in the dado down both edges. I kind of like the look but I assume the crack would get full of crud, but I guess it would be much trouble to pop it up and out and glean the glass and the rebates. A better/more practical idea might be to make the top and then have a piece of glass cut to fit the entire top.

I like the idea of just leaving it open, and let your imagination fill in the rest.

Similar with glass infill

I made this solid cocobolo table about 36 years ago. After fabricating the wood, I made a pattern for the glass, had it cut out, and used the glass to scribe the actual layout for the routed shoulder. I made it so close a fit that as the wood shrank slightly, the glass cannot be removed.
