Martin,

My daughter is a painter and a college art professor. She bought a camera lucida several years ago. I sent her the link to your post and asked her what she thought of hers. Here's her response:

"Hello! This one looks different from the one I have. If the viewfinder is really that big, it’ll probably be easier to use than mine. I think they all distort proportions somewhat, so they’re better for things like flowers or still lives where the proportions are forgiving. Portraits tend to come out a little wonky. They take a little getting used to, but are great fun."

About the same time she bought the camera Lucida, she asked me if we could build a camera obscura. I researched it and we built one. It was a great fun project. She still uses it in her classes when they talk about Vermeer.

Years ago I put together a camera lucida after reading David Hockney's book Secret Knowledge, which describes what they are and how they're used.

Mine was pretty simple, just a prism with no way to adjust for differences in light intensity or to bring both the drawing surface and the object into focus at the same time. Typically they will be at different distances and some form of magnification for the drawing surface is helpful.

It was an interesting experiment but with other options like photography, scanning and tracing available it wasn't the best way for me to do things.

The camera lucida isn't enough if you can't draw, which I can't. It can be fun to experiment with, though.
