My Lovely Bride, the financial, organizational, and planning pillar of the household, decided to get a Supplemental package for us. I think it's the one offered by AARP, and we have a prescription program through the place I retired from, including vision, dental. Have had this for a bunch of years now and all transactions are smooth (and invisible to me).

I went with a supplemental plan. I just changed my Part D plan, which takes effect January 1. Although there are no assurances for future health, I've always been fairly healthy with few issues requiring medical help. To that end, my reasoning is the supplemental costs me less than an Advantage plan would. I figure it can always be changed during open enrollment if necessary.

Tom, I also went with a supplemental plan. It has been 10 years since I enrolled in Medicare and that combination has worked well. IIRC, cost was the deciding factor. Here is a link to a recent review that might be helpful to you. Jim

Jim,

Thanks for the link. I have read it but I believe there is some incorrect information listed there pertaining to HSA contributions. Everything I have read seems to contradict what is stated. I have forwarded it to my financial advisor.

We went to an independent insurance broker and got really good advice. Due to our individual needs, my wife and I got different plans, both of which serve us very well.

Medicare supplement insurance policies are called Medigap Policies. These plans are facing new policies in 2020. Medicare advantage plans get parts A & B from the advantage plan and not Medicare and these may be an HMO or a PPO and other plans and normally include prescription drug coverage in most plans where in original Medicare a separate policy for prescriptions must be attained. Be careful as to addressing supplemental vs advantage. You may say you have supplemental where you are actually in an Advantage plan. Refer to your Medicare and You Handbook which you should have received in the mail. Yes it is confusing!
