Completely OT Rain jacket/ dry cleaner?

Barry Irby

I have a jacket I really like and don't want to hunt for a new one. The fabric is a bit tired and limp. It seems to me I took such a jacket to a dry cleaner many years ago and they treated it with something that acted like starch and made it more water resistant. Renewed it a bit. I asked a local dry cleaner and the fellow looked at me as if I was in the wrong type of business and asking for car parts.

I looked online and they discussed some sort of spray. Might be it, but doesn't seem right.

Anybody know how to do this or where to get it done or what to use?

Scotchgard in a spray can?

Think of it as a T12 with mag. ballast

You are generations out of date with your rain gear. Time to buy a new jacket. The result will be dazzling. If you actually use rain gear in the rain the $200 spent for a quality jacket will be returned in comfort. If you don't know where to shop, go to the LV of outdoor gear, L.L.Bean.

One cleaner isn't much of a survey. I'd take the jacket to 3 or 4 different dry cleaners, at least one in an upscale neighborhood, and if no positive replies then there's always the over the counter spray.

It's worse than that....

It's a Members Only jacket.

I'm the last member.

Good idea on the LV of jackets.

Nik Wax is...

...the best line of products that I've found.

Some are wash in some are spray on.

Not expensive and work much better than Scotchguard.

If you're interested in new rain gear, look at Helly Hansen. They make serious offshore sailing gear, but have incorporated their technology in a full line of men's and women's jackets. I suggest their "Crew Midlayer Jacket" with a fleece lining (https://www.hellyhansen.com/en_us/crew-midlayer-jacket-30253).They make the same jacket without the lining (https://www.hellyhansen.com/en_us/crew-jacket-30263?nosto=nosto-page-product1&refSrc=231670&color=290860).Both come with or without a hood. I gave one to my son in law for his birthday this summer and he loves it. I had a Helly Hansen rain jacket that I wore for about ten years before it delaminated. I sent it back to Helly Hansen to see if they could fix it. They sent me a new one, no questions asked.

warming a rain jacket

Bill Tindall, E.Tn.

We get lots of winter rain....40 degrees and miserable. I "winterize" my summer rain jacket by layering a fleece or down vest under it. I do like multitasking.

I do the same thing. That way I can use the same rain jacket all year long.
