In similar projects, I have generally just sanded and wiped the sanding dust off of the wood (80 grit then 150 grit). But in my case it may have been polycrylic - which is an entirely different beast than polyurethane.

But you can always do a test in a more or less inconspicuous place.

YMMV.

Oil poly sticks just fine on acrylic.

I painted an oil painted door may years ago with water based paint and it peeled. Both now days will be formulated different with possibly different results. I have had success with oil sticking to latex.

If the paints sticks half as well as it does when there is a screw up in masking I was pretty sure it would be okay.

Sand and clean (damp-wipe off the dust)--120-150 grit.

Prime with a BONDING primer--your local paint store can help with this.

Two coats of a quality acrylic enamel if they're in a damage-prone area (below 8'), otherwise any old latex/acrylic wall paint will do.

Best thing is to do a test. You can say what you like, but at the end of the day all hat maters is the case in question and a test takes less time than a series of posts. I use Latex over epoxies as boat paint and it is crazy durable. But I did a test first.

"Latex" paint tells us how the paint was made (latex polymerization) but offers no clue as to what got polymerized, nor the additional ingredients like the coalescing agents. These components will determine what the latex paint sticks to, or not.

To test adhesion cross hatch through the cured coating with a razor blade, with scratches about 1/8" apart. Apply tape, then pull tape off. If the tiny squares lift, adhesion is poor.
