Memphis area woodworking

Dale Warder

I am considering a relocation to the Memphis area, and am curious about the state of woodworking in the area. Are there any general woodworking guilds or Woodturning or woodcarving groups in the area? Any information regarding these activities would be appreciated.

Thanks

Dale

This is the place to buy supplies in Memphis. I don't live there, but let's just say I visit very frequently. I believe it is a Rockler affiliated store. I have been several times, and they have a good selection of supplies.

Nashville has a Woodcraft store.

Greg Pennington teaches Windsor chairs just north of Nashville. I highly recommend his classes.

Sorry, but we are in a woodworking void here! We've had a few decent wood places over the years, but there isn't much left other than the shop mentioned above and it ain't much (and very high prices). Actually, that's one of the reasons the wife and I are considering leaving this area. She's an artist and there isn't much of that around here either. We'd like to live somewhere that better supports our interests and habits. (That may be "over the rainbow," but its fun to dream).

I mail order all my wood and that's not a great situation, but I make it work. I'm sure the UPS guy hates me!

I guess these things are relative. Others may have different opinions! Depends on what you are looking for.

On the other hand, we live in a burb called Bartlett which is a very nice city and very well managed. There are several nice burbs.

Kiln dried boards can get expensive here, but if you like woodturning then there's a lot free FORD wood (aka Found On the Road Dead) which can be picked up around this area. I always find more hardwood than I have time to turn after big storms.

Memphis has a very large woodturning guild with close to 100 members that meets in the Bartlett Civic Center. Take a look at our newsletters and meeting schedule here: www.midsouthwoodturners.com

Also, if you have a kiln or don't mind air drying freshly milled wood then several people in the area have bandsaw mills.

Note: A couple of wood working clubs meet at The Woodwork Shop in Bartlett. While their supplies aren't the cheapest, this shop often gives 10% off discounts to club members and anyone coming to their demonstrations.

Thanks for the information. It appears that woodworking must not be as popular there as here (western Carolinas). I am somewhat surprised that an area with a population as large as Memphis would not have more hardwood suppliers.

I found a reference to a woodworking guild in Memphis, but it appears that the website has been abandoned for several years. Do you know if this is accurate?

Keep in mind a club might be active, but their website dormant because no one has time to keep it up. I suggest calling 'The Woodwork Shop' to see how active are the Tri-State Woodworkers and Carving Club since those meet in their store.

I can only speak for the Mid-South Woodturners Guild which is very active in the Memphis area. Our meetings can often have 50 or more people.
