OT:  Find a Lost Cell Phone

Fortunately this morning I misplaced my cell phone at home but for a while I was revisiting all my stops. Without another phone I could not locate my phone by calling it. If 911 services can locate a cell phone one would think there are other services that can locate a lost phone. Anyone knowledgeable about locating misplaced or dropped cell phones? Likely they require another cell phone, do they provide a street address, which wouldn't help in a large park, show a location marker on an area map, . . .?

911 can use Cell company data to locate a phone to some degree of accuracy. Depending on the number of cell towers in an area, 911 can get to within a few 10s of yards.

You and I can't access this data.

Phone makers / app providers use the phone's GPS chip (and seen WiFi hot spots) to locate the phone and then send the location data to "the cloud". You find the phone by querying the cloud.

Issue is -- do you want a developer like Google or Apple to know your location 24/7 to within a few feet?

What sort of phone? If it is Android, do you have a registered Google account? If so, it will tell you where the phone is, sometimes within a matter of feet.

That's what I have. Android. And using Android Device Manager (a Google site) I can make my phone ring, find it on a map, and even erase it.

Pretty sure Apple has the similar functionality.

If your phone is an Apple, then ask to borrow a friend's iphone, or ipad, use the findmyphone app. You will need to sign into ICLoud with your appleid and password.

as mentioned, both iPhone (Apple) and Android (everything not an iPhone) have aspps that will find your phone.

Trap is you have to enable the feature -- which may mean down loading an app or changing a security setting -- before you loose your phone.
