With the drawers done I am on the home stretch. To install the base molding I cut the front and one side over-length and with a miter on one end (the correct end I might point out as the side molding is right and left handed, a fact that has bit me in the past.

I test fit and diddle with this miter to get it good enough, which is enabled by the fact that both pieces are cut longer than the final length. The front piece is temporarily fixed in place and the side piece trimmed to length and permanently fastened, as shown in Picture 1.

Next the front is trimmed to length in small steps while using the other side piece to test the miter angle and length of the front molding. When the length and angle is good enough the front is permanently fastened. The process is repeated for the final corner.


With patience the result will be good enough. A practice bun foot is shown in the picture. I have not turned in a while so some practice is in order.

Bill, how did you make the molding? I recall it is two pieces (I think), but did you use multiple router bits, or one.

Just curious because I need to make a similar molding only smaller.

Routes to complex moldings

1. Divide them into parts. Easier to install and one can better find bits to make elements of the whole. In the case at hand the molding consists of a shelf with edges rounded a bit, an ogee, and a stepped 1/4 round.

2. The Lee Valley "Stanley 55" collection simulates the moldings that can be made with the Stanely 55 plane. This collection resulted from a suggestion I made to a receptive company. Combinations of these bits make a lot of classic moldings.

3. When all else fails, waste out most of a pattern by any means at hand- simpler router bits or even the table saw. Make a scraper for the final pattern and scrape. It is surprisingly fast if the grain is straight.

I admire those that can come up with designs seemingly out of thin air. They deserve double credit for what they do- for design and execution.

If you can't, copy. I keep a notebook and occasionally a camera at hand. When I see a nice molding profile, I make note of it. The base of this chest of drawers will look familiar to anyone familiar with Chester County early 1700's furniture. I laid on my belly and photographed a dandy bun foot in the kitchen of the Mack Headley household. The top molding was inspired by something I saw in a museum in Florence, Italy. (Living in TN, I was once dismissed as provincial by someone on the Hand Tool Forum )

I am a 'Clevelander' growing up in the western burbs. My dad and uncles were Cleveland firefighters, one uncle a police detective. Had not been downtown in 20 plus years. This June there was a NAFEMS conference that I got tagged to attend. I was shocked how straight forward it was to get off I71 to E 9th and to the parking garage. So little traffic. Overall it was all clean and modern. Quite impressive.
