Grinder question

How much run-out is acceptable in a bench grinder? I have an old 6" grinder that has almost no (.002") run out when the shaft is turned by hand, but if I push on the shaft perpendicularly to the axis of rotation the run-out increases to about .01"? Does anyone have an idea what the run-out on a new grinder, say a Rikon, would be? Thanks. -Howard

Why is the runout a concern? If you use a diamond stone truer the effect of the runout would me masked. If the runout bothers you it is usually easy enough to disassemble the grinder and remove and replace the bearings. Bearings are usually not very expensive.

Runout that changes with conditions (indicating wear) may be more of a concern. Excessive runout on a bench grinder that uses CBN wheels is a concern.

Sounds like the bearings are bad. Can’t see a scenario where any runout is acceptable beyond a thousandth or two.

If it has cartridge bearings and the shaft runout is reasonable, then it should be relatively cheap to fix. If it was a good make like a Baldor it would be worth the fix.
