My Appreciation for WC

Hi All,

I wanted to reach out and say a public Thank You to Ellis and the kind people at WC. I read WC more often now in the last 6 months than I have in the last 7 years. I appreciate the community and the kind advice often given. I remember well the community here that brought me great fun, our get togethers and friendships. Life changes effect us all, this has been my truth as well, it's good to find WC again as one of my daily drop in's, I hope all is well in your worlds out there and wood working is keeping you happy,

I’m a fairly spry 82-year-old who had been a reader/participant at WoodCentral since the demise of Badger Pond. I started visiting BP to learn something about finish for a project I’d completed and became hooked on internet forums as a way of increasing my knowledge about all sorts of topics. I have been a moderator for a couple other forums on subjects I enjoy. My interest in woodworking began in the early 1970’s when my wife and I had contractors add to our house near Traverse City, MI, and I ended up doing the trim work to reduce mounting costs. I had no tools. I bought a P-C skilsaw, hammer, screwdrivers and one of those wooden miter boxes with a backsaw. I made trim for windows and doors from one-by lumber and started my woodworking career. At the same time, I started a 50-year career as a ski instructor. I got onto the night shift at a mental hospital so I could ski days, and spent my 30s and 40s with that schedule. I eventually replaced the PC-upside-down-in-a-board with a real table saw and began the purchase of enough equipment to fill a jam-packed 40-foot shipping container we used after we sold our property in Michigan. The ski instructing had taken us to Colorado and we were spending too much on maintaining utilities for two homes. A couple years ago, the dozen years spent at 10,000 feet of elevation was making my body produce too many red blood cells, so we had to leave my “forever” home in the mountains and we moved back to Michigan. Now I have to find myself a shop space for all those tools in the container.

Thank you, Jim. You're one of the earliest members here -- what, right after Badger Pond went away back in '03? As hard as it is for me to believe, on October 23, WoodCentral will be 20 years old. It has been a long, eventful and wonderful journey for me, and a privilege to meet and interact with so many talented woodworkers over the years. The unifying concept seems to be the caring and sharing that goes on here-- the community spirit -- that encourages us all to expand our horizons, and not just in woodworking but in all realms of our experience. We've truly attracted a gifted and selfless group of people here, and I thank you all for being part of it.

I attended right after Badger Pond, which at the time did not feel like the begining of WC, it was well up and running. I was only at BP for a few weeks before the great revelation.

I too have been in Badger Pond, I can’t remember how long but it was more than a couple of years, when Wayne shut it down, Ellis greeted us with open arms!

I'd been on Badger Pond almost since its inception - formatted all the bios for the site - and was caught flat-footed when Wayne decided to dump it, calling it a 'great experiment.

I was happy to find WoodCentral, and Ellis' open-armed welcome. Been a 'regular' here ever since.

Yes, I remember that. That's how I got here too ... when BP closed. The welcome was warm and friendly. Made the transition easier.

And I remember you well, too, Jim. The hockey playing (Goalie?), the wood working , of course, and especially your adopting of your daughter. She's what, about 20 now?
