Thought I'd ask -- opinion.

Patriotic shield. Barn decoration. Another family farm/house sale. Made from three oak 10” x 1” (full) boards. Weight approaching 30 lbs. Dimension approx. 36” x 29”. Told it has been in barn under roof for at least the last ten years. Before that on barn outside "for awhile". She thinks maybe as early as WWI era. Weathered with cracks randomly diving as much as ½ from the surface. Was rafter hung (as would be a heavy mirror), but an attachment failed and it luckily hung dangling by its wire. New, old find. DIn"t cost much. Current owner indicated firewood bound.
I want to remount for wall with screws and metal ring hangars. The wood condition and the weight concerns me. I added a ¼” ply backing hoping it will help.
The wood is dry, dry, dry. What are the chances of screws (as opposed to some other anchor (nail or clips of some sort)) causing the wood to split with modern humidity/weather expansion indoors? I’m planning on this being permanently inside on a brick wall.
Seems straightforward enough, but don’t want to screw things up. Apparently it has been around a while.
