New Music Stands Completed

I just delivered this pair of music stands completed in June 2018.

These stands are a variation of the 2015 "Mancini" Music Stands built for the Salmagundi Club of New York City.

These new stands feature an improved Desk Angle Adjustment Mechanism-designed by my father-Roland Young. These stands are made from Cherry, Maple and Brass. I did all the brass work. Finish is Black Furniture Paint and Shellac.

The new Desk Angle Adjustment Mechanism features a front activated- spring loaded lever that allows the user to shift the angle of music from flat-0 degrees to straight up and down - 90 degrees and three angles in between.

The brass handle lever allows the user to lock and unlock the swivel feature.

When the lever is pushed down the desk can be rotated 360 degrees or removed entirely from the brass extention pole.

When the brass lever is pulled up the desk is locked in place and will not rotate or be pulled off the brass extension rod.

Again, Alan, another well executed design. What is more important is the collaboration with your dad on another project. I know how much it must mean to him and how proud he surely is of you. Nice work!

I live in Mechanicsville, VA (not far from Richmond) and I've been building furniture and cabinetry for well over 20 years now. It all started with my frustration of not being able to cut a straight line with a hand saw. About this same time, a guy named Norm appeared on my local PBS station. The more I watched, the more I learned. I also started thinking, "Hey, I can do that"! And so, I began with small projects and soon found myself moving up to increasingly advanced work. Word of mouth started the ball rolling and before I knew it, I was building all kinds of things for people. While this is not what I do to pay the bills, it has provided me with a means of equipping my shop over the years. The main downside to all of this is when my wife looks at a finished project and says, "I want one of those" and I know I don't have the time to make that happen right then. I take advantage of any slack time between commissions to work on things we want and this seems to keep her "on my side". She even surprised me one day with a new Tormek sharpening system. Sometimes it pays to leave that tool catalog lying around open! For me, woodworking is a type of therapy. I can go out to the shop and totally forget about the world outside. There have been days when I get out there early and before I know it, it's dark outside and I have no idea where the time went! I also enjoy challenging my skills and learning new things. Most of the time, since the majority of my work tends to be custom pieces, I'm working on projects I�ve never built before. While this takes me longer than if I were doing production work, I find it more appealing because there's always something new to learn. I haven't had any formal training in woodworking. My teachers have been experience, the many books and magazines I've read, WoodCentral, and of course, a guy named Norm.

"Finish is Black Furniture Paint and Shellac. " What is black furniture paint?

Application question. Smooth as turned maple is it still isn't glass smooth in my hands. If I am going to paint I lay down a coat of Kilz, a product that builds, then sands easily. Did you try to achieve "glass smooth" on the painted surfaces, and if so how?

How was the brass treated, if at all? To keep brass shiny it is typically lacquered with nitrocellulose lacquer. Don't know if brass can be shellaced.

The "clef" symbols are a nice touch. Caught my eye. Creative "discoveries" like this one are a delight to find when exploring someone's work. I'm not creative so as an alternative I leave a tool, pencil or scribe mark here and there to be found, but not distract.

My name is Don and I'm a Turning addict. There, I finally can admit I have a problem. The problem is not enough time to turn! I work as a Medical Imaging Tech for a living but that's just so I can light and heat the shop and buy more tools. I've been turning since 2000 and it has changed my life. I never had a creative outlet before I discoverd Woodturning and now I can't get enough. After I turned my first pen, my wonderful wife saw how excited I was and bought me a mini lathe. She now refers to herself as a "Turning Widow". She is a potter and quilter so she understands the obsession. My interests in turning are many and varied and I'm sure I will not live long enough to try everything I'd like to, but I'll give it a shot. Unfortunately we don't have any children or pets so you'd think I have all kinds of free time to turn, but for some reason I don't. I belong to the Adirondack Woodturners Association in upstate New York, the Mohawk Valley Woodturners, the Old Country Guild of Woodturnes and AAW, as well as the Northeastern Woodworkers Association. (I'd also like to learn to do flatwork someday.) Happy and Safe Turning, Don

I mis-Labled the finish process-

Hi Bill-The wood for the tops ie "The Desk" and the turned sections is cherry.

In previous stands I have coated them with different primers-one time with thinned hide glue- This time I used paint from Black Dog Salvage

it is a matte finish but builds evenly in one coat.

The golden yellow disk on the base is gilded powder mixed with amber shellace.

After all that finishing-paint and gilding/amber shellac-I top coated with spray lacquer-including the brass. The laquer over the shellacked lower disk seemed to have no coverage issue---

Absolutely amazing, both beautiful and functional pieces.

I don't think I'd ever be able to throw it into the back of Dodge Caravan with the sax and clarinet though .

Alan, those get better with each iteration. They are beautiful and they should inspire your young musicians. Very nice!

This is the 2nd piece in the last year in which I've collaborated with my Dad. Working with him at this point of his life (89 1/2 years old) has been wonderful.
