Chess Ensemble in Art Deco form

Alan Young

I have just finished this chess ensemble. The playing pieces and storage box handles are in Aluminium and Brass.

The playing surface is Maple and Sapele. The case is Mahogany. Storage boxes for the playing pieces are made from poplar with Maple and Sapele faces and have green flocking on the interior with a Sapele/birchplywood lid.

The playing pieces are in an Art Deco styling. I am fortunate to have access to a metal lathe to turn the playing pieces. The playing pieces and storage box handles are in Aluminium and Brass.

Wow Alan. You have the rite to bust your buttons with pride over this project. Nicely done.

Nice Alan. Like the board too ;)

Are the pieces clear-coated? The Alu will, of course, haze and the brass will discolor from hand oils. That might enhance the look unless you plan on them staying bright.

Have you hollowed the pieces? The brass would seem to be quite heavy without some internal relief.

You don't miss a beat do you?!

Alan Young

Yes the brass is heavier- I toyed with hollowing the Aluminium and filling with lead and epoxy-Decided though that lessening the weight of the brass is a better remedy. I have lacquered both sets. Hope that is enough- End used may need to scuff and re-lacquer in time.

Don't know what you are charging, but this item would make a great Christmas present. If you ever get some slack time I'll bet you could sell as many as you make easily.

Absolutely gorgeous. Not to pick nits but I'd put them in the case bottom to bottom so the tops don't get dinged when you pick it up
