OT - any plumbers??

JL

The toilet in the master bathroom is a bit "cranky". It just doesn't flush well. Sometimes it needs a bit of "help" with the "plumber's helper". The rest of the toilets work okay. There is good drainage from the tubs and the shower.

Thoughts?

Many causes but you might start by checking to be certain the float is working properly. If it is old and partially filled with water it might not be opening fully.

You should be looking for a partial blockage. Very often it's in the toilet's internal passage unless somebody cheaped out and put in 3" waste piping.

A closet auger may solve your issue but you may be best off in removing the tank and then the base to find and remove the obstruction rather than trying to push it down stream. Tasking this route, plan on replacing the wax seal.

Have one of those nifty inspection probe things? Could save you some work.

When it is slow does it gurgle? The tub and sink do they drain quick or just drain on the slow side? I would start by checking the air vent if the tub and sink are slow also. The toilet just uses more water flow quickly and shows the problem first.

There are many possibilities. I've experienced bad venting, many partial clogs, and a badly-installed wax ring that shifted sideways and partially covered the opening in the flange. Old-style toilets with the flapper valves are problematic at the best of times. In my latest bathroom remodel I installed a new-style Kohler which does away with the flapper and uses a 'rising cylinder' which manages to dump its water load much faster than the old style ever could and is the best flushing toilet I've experienced.

Look for a toothbrush

Bill Tindall, E.Tn.

That was what was stuck in ours that gave the same symptoms.....children related.

We had a discussion along these lines at a lunch one day and several reported children related partial obstruction in the trap section.

Retired plumber here......Mark is correct. Remove the toilet into its sections, then inspect for blockage down the line with an auger.....probable has a child's toy down the line.....lol.

At my last job one of the other telescope operators and I often did the plumbing, electrical, & appliance maintenance as well as our official jobs. We had a problem toilet like that, and finally pulled it apart and off the flange, only to find a comb (fine tooth no less!) caught in it's trap.

Sometimes the holes that the water run through get clogged .

This fix is easier than others, and is cheap. So it is worth trying first.

Pop the lid off the toilet, and sequeeze about 1/4 dawn soap down the drain tube in the toilet. Let it set 15 minutes. Flush, then repeat.

This fixes many slow flush problems.

Sorry for typo, should be ~1/4 cup of dawn soap

Thanks for the suggestions

I don't believe it is a toothbrush or a toy - it is the master bathroom after all. It may be something related to cosmetics though :). Anyway, we are considering a different toilet - so I will probably replace it sometime next year.

JL, when and if you do a replacement....make sure that there is not something in the discharge line ....

obtain and use an electronic viewing tool before you install the new one.
