Maybe that is too cryptic. The whole breaker set will solve all planing problems threads on the hand tool board, should apply here also. People are jumping ship to spiral heads when there is lots that could be done to improve performance in traditional heads. I don't know why I would want to bother with carbide insert technology when I can sharpen and set my own blades, but they certainly do improve productivity in certain situations, and mean one doesn't have to hire people with as much skill.
