Magnolia - What a sweet turn *LINK*

Mike Brazeau

Yesterday I was working on bowl turning with a fellow I have been mentoring. He brought along a piece of old super dry magnolia which came from his dad's workshop and supposedly came from a neighbour. It was marked Magnolia, but had no dark heartwood like I have seen on limbs I cut off our Magnolias. It had some really nice spalting with only minor rot spots. The size was unusual for here in Southern Ontario, but his dad lived in Sarnia across from Port Huron, MI. What a beautiful wood to turn. Took detail amazingly well and a shear scrape with bowl gouge on the outside was easily a 220-240 surface and a scraper on the inside bottom almost as good. Did a bit of an undercut rim with a Hunter Tool, equally successful. I have a pile of limb wood from one I took out this past summer, so I guess I will get to milling some up into spindle wood. Envious of you folks in the areas where it grows like a weed.

Happy New Year to all at WoodCentral.

Earlier this year my brother gave me a limb cut from his magnolia. I finally used it to turn some Christmas ornaments for him and his girlfriend. I'd never turned it before, but I also was impressed by how nice the surfaces left by the tool (gouge or skew) were. And the smell was nice (sort of sweet and spicy).

Here is a quick shot of the bowl taken today. Just got a new Canon Rebel T5i which I am getting a handle on. I had a senior's moment and mounted backwards initially and reversed after I realized it, but had started roughing the bottom area. We decided to keep the sloped top portion. It is about 7" x 3 1/2". John hasn't decided on finish yet, thinking Minwax Danish Oil or General Salad Bowl Finish. Appreciate any input.

Lots of Character in that wood. One my favorites finishing process is what I learned from Dale Nish back in the eighties at Arrowmount. Sand to your satisfaction then apply Deft Clear Wood finish, wipe excess, wait a little bit then go with Antique Minwax Oil. Gives a nice low gloss, or several coats will give higher and if that's not enough bluff. If you go direct with the oil it will darken. Of course other turners will have their favor right way as Dale use to say.

Thanks Mike, it sure looks like a very nice bowl and the grain pattern in it is very interesting. Nice Job.

From what I can make out it is very slick smooth finish on that.

I am going to have to look out to see who is going to cut some in few month to get my hands on it. It looks very nice.
