L-N Planes on Back Order - How Long?

Hoa Dinh in Union City

>[kind-of-rant mode on]

I placed an order to Garrett Wade (GW) for a #2 and a #140L a week ago. They are both on BO.

I sent 2 email messages to GW asking for estimate delivery time. I even stated in the messages that if they gave their best estimate and missed it, I wouldn't mind.

I ordered the planes to use as gifts. I have until November - plenty of time. I don't care if the order is finally cancelled.

Do you know how long the BO will be? I'm just curious.

The greatest dissapointment is that there has been no word back from GW, not even an acknowledgement or a we-dont-know reply.

I think if a company posts a "contact-us" email address, they're supposed to check and reply to email messages. I expect at least an acknowledgement within 1 business day.

Please don't tell me to call GW. At this point I'd like to see how long and how many email messages before they reply.

L-N Planes on BO, and DVD comments

Jim Shaver - Oakville, Ontario

>Hi Hoa,

I was at our Halton Furniture Makers Society metting Thursday night, our guest speaker was Rob Cosman. During the presentation he mentioned that LN had expanded their facilities and some production interuptions were experienced. I am not sure if that is part of this current BO issue or not.

I did pick up the 140, Rob demonstrated hounds tooth dovetails to us, along with some sharpening refreshers and saw sharpening details.

I also picked up Rob's DVD on M&T and I had recently bought his Drawer Making dvd, both are excellent productions and teaching materials (nice to see Mark Eaton too in one of them).

I also bought Chris S. dvd on Course/Medium and Fine....this is a wonderful explaintion of using hand planes and one I enjoyed a great deal...even Dana liked it, but she said "dad, he needs a hair cut" Hope that's okay Chris, excellent dvd's on all accounts.

Take care,

Jim

>Hoa, I ordered a LN Jack form LN in early January. I was told two weeks ago that they were temporarily "out of stock." It arrived last week. In all fairness, though, I ordered a custom chipbreaker for my #604 at the same time and asked that they be shipped together. It took a little while for them to get my chipbreaker on the produciton schedule, so that might account for some of the delay.

>I ordered a LN 140 from GW in February after noticing it on-sale for an unusually good price. It was shown as in-stock on their site at the time of the order. After not hearing anything for 10 days, I emailed them. A day and a half later I got a terse, "sorry for the inconvenience" reply stating that my order had been cancelled due to the item being no longer available!

I think they must have had some stock of the older LN 140's that didn't have a nicker that they were closing-out. Nothing metioned about that in their ad though. Whatever stock they had probably went quickly. You'd think that they'd have mentioned "quantities limited" in the ad, and orders would have been rejected when none were left.

As far as I'm concerned GW is off my list of suppliers because of the customer non-service. In recent years they've shifted from being a first-rate dealer of premium quality tools for the discerning woodworker to a five and ten gizmo vendor.

>for sharing your thoughts.

As stated, I don't need the planes right now. In fact, I don't need them at all. I ordered them to take advantage of the good prices. I won't be surprised or upset if the order is cancelled by GW. I don't expect too much.

Maybe it's already too much expecting GW to reply to email messages within a few business days 8-(

Brad in Ottawa

>Jim,

I was thinking of picking up the M & T DVD. Is it as a good as the Drawer or Dovetail DVD's? Did you pick up any pointers?

Brad- M & T DVD Review

Jim Shaver - Oakville, Ontario

>Hi Brad,

I did find the drawer DVD better for me, I learnt more from it, but the M&T was also equally detailed as Rob is able to explain it in his own way.

From a production stand point these two are his best efforts todate, even my daughter enjoyed them, but she's also met Rob a few times so she likes seeing him.

The M&T covers a blind M&T and a through wedged M&T, all well done.

The essence of his instruction is that the process is not complicated and that hand tools are accurate and quick in enabling you to make quality work, it's your choise what tools you use...I own a few LN and a few LV and soon a new S&S...but what ever it is, you can see benifits in both dvd's and I am glad I have them.

Take care,

Jim

Hoa Dinh

>Here's the events:

- Feb. 18: order placed online.

- Feb. 19: order confirmation from GW.

- Feb. 27: email to GW, asking for order status

- Mar. 3: email to GW, asking for order status.

- Mar. 6: email to GW, asking for order status.

- Mar. 7: email from GW, "Your order #NNNNNNN for items 25P10.01 and 25P02.01 has been cancelled since neither item is available at this time."

GW just lost another customer.

>Great. I ordered a #2 from them around the same time that you did. Now I'm afraid to email them to get a status update. When I check my order on their site the info says ordered and shipment pending. I knew those prices were too good to be true. Garrett Wade has another customer teetering on the edge . . . .

>That sucks Hoa! Nothing worse then finding a great deal only to find out they don't have stock. Had a similar incident last year with a power tool dealer.

I have never bought from GW and don't even know where they are based as I can get most of my stuff from either LV or LN Canada.

It sucks, but not that....

Hoa Dinh in Alameda

>It's OK not having the order items in stock. I'm disappointed, but can't blame GW for that. Even though a good store would offer some alternatives to the customer before cancelling the order.

But ignoring repeated customer's messages for 10 days is just unacceptable.

they cancelled my order too

ydb1md

>I received word that they cancelled my order today. Below is the email correspondence between myself and Garrett Wade.

Dave Brown to GarrettWade:

The items are no longer available? Well, I know they're still available if I were to shop elsewhere. Were you clearing out your Lie Nielsen stock but someone forgot to update the website?

I'm not sure if you realize it but the woodworking community is very tight knit and you all are losing a lot of customers due to the confusion with the Lie Nielsen products on your website.

On just one woodworking forum alone (link), this issue has gotten the attention of a few hundred readers. Good customer service is rewarded with lots of return shoppers but word of bad customer service spreads like wildfire.

Just my two cents.

Anyone from NYC know what's up with GW?

Ted Owen, Pittsburgh

>In the late 1970's and early 1980's, most of the gifts I received from Santa or for birthday were from GW. In fact, my first quality (relatively) power tools--Inca jointer/planer and table saw--came from there. So I got to know the folks, and they seemed a good bunch.

Is Garry Chin still the owner? Doesn't seem like the level of service he'd condone.

Best, Ted

>Well, I wouldn't have been upset if they'd been out of them because their site did note "backordered." But, then for them to cancel the order "because they were out" is a little insulting when you know that LN still makes the #2. Maybe if they'd been honest and said "we're not carrying those planes anymore and our website should have noted it" it wouldn't be irritating. There are always hiccups in stock supply and I didn't want an immediate response -- just honesty from them.
