Anyone use the Freud box cutter set?

ebd

I've been using my dado set for box joints and I'm finding that it doesn't cut a perfectly flat bottom. This sometimes makes a thin gap where the fingers join. I don't want to have to clean the joints with a chisel so I'm thinking about getting the Freud SBOX8 Box Joint Cutter Set.

It only cuts 1/4" and 3/8" joints but I don't think I'm going to need more than that for small boxes. The jig I made to cut the joints is 1/2" so I'd have to modify that.

Anyone have experience with this cutter set? If so what do you think?

I've had the Freud set pretty much since it first came out. It's great. I've probably made a hundred different boxes and other projects, with no problems at all.

Lately, I've been using it with the Incra I-box jig, and that was an even better setup. I've thrown my home made box joint jig away. The I-box jig is pricey, but it's definitely the best box joint jig I've ever used.

Like Jim, I've had a set for a long time. It's perfect for 1/4" and 3/8" box joints. That's what it was made for, but I've found lots of other odd-ball uses for it. Right now I'm using it to cut double tenons in some 2" rails for a chest of drawers I'm building. It's a nice set. You won't regret buying one.

Thanks guys. I ordered one this morning. I can't wait to try it out. I'll modify my home made jig but I have been lusting for the Incra. I'll probably talk myself into one of those before too long.

I used home made box joint jigs for years. Then I got the Incra. That's one bad motor scooter. You might need to dig down in the pocket for one but you won't be sad you did. Perfect box joints every time!!

Now that gas prices have dropped I can't use my old rationalization - heck that's only X tanks of gas. But you're right it's not that much and I've always felt that buying a quality tool was mony well spent.

I just break out in a big grin when I read threads like this! As to price of an I-BOX, just compare it to some of the miscellaneous cheap plastic woodworking accessories that cost almost as much.

Just remember, when using the Freud and other "reversible blade" box joint sets - you need to re-calibrate the I-BOX when you change finger sizes. It is not a big deal, and other than that, they work just fine.

Alan,

I seem to recall that this was one of your designs? If so, congratulations on a great one!

Just tried out the cutter set. Beautiful, beautiful, BEAUTIFUL. I re-worked the jig I had made for 3/8" and made some improvements (including a push toggle to hold the piece being cut solidly in place).

I'm going to make a few boxes before I decide to get the Incra box jig. I don't plan on switching from 3/8" joints and most/all of the boxes I'll make will be in the same size ballpark.

Not sure I'll ever need 1/4" joints and the cutter set doesn't do bigger than 3/8" so I don't think I'll need to spend the money if my jig is as precise as I think it is. We'll see,

I use to use the table saw and a dado blade for box joints, but since I started doing box joints with a router and dovetail jig with a box joint template I haven't went back to the table saw for that task. With a router the bottoms are pretty much guaranteed to be flat, and the spacing equal with the dovetail jig.
