176 Woodworking Projects by the editors of Workbench magazine

Long before the current plethora of woodworking magazines became available, there was Workbench magazine. Since 1957, woodworking ideas and plans have rolled off the presses in this original DIY publication, and the staff has now pulled together some of their favorite plans for publication in one volume.

A breadbox, a perpetual calendar, wooden sundials, folding book racks, a child’s folding rocking chair, a silverware chest, medicine cabinet, and yes, paper towel holders, are some of the projects included.

The original, spiraling whorlwinds are here, assembled of thin slats and center drilled to receive a long threaded rod, then hung outside as wind spinners. Birdhouses, cribbage and checker boards, a poker table, nautical bunkbeds and a standing floor mirror are presented, as are a stand-up desk, kiddy furniture, a hanging swing, and deck chairs. The book is all black and white presentation, with line drawings and measurement details in exploded diagrams. Some pieces are reduced on gridded squares for enlargement.

From decks, patio items and outdoor furniture, to toys and games, there are bound to be projects here a do-it-yourselfer will want to build. Many of these are simple enough to start out young people on, or to use in a beginner’s woodworking class just to familiarize oneself with tools and techniques. This is a reasonably priced book full of a wide variety of projects.
