VERSATILE STORAGE

This hall seat's usage will grow with its user.

SHOP OWNER: Robert Clough

LOCATION: Muskego, WI

My parents used to have a seat/chest in their front hall at the main staircase. It was used to store overshoes, gloves, and similar winter clothing. Though I have often wished we had one, we did not. Therefore, when thinking about what to build for my youngest grandchild, I decided to make one. He could use it presently as a toy chest and seat and later use it for winter stuff storage.

The piece is very heavy, as it is red elm. Although I've never used red elm before, I found it an interesting wood whose color is enhanced with linseed oil. No stain was used at all.

Basically the construction is frame and loose panels. Each panel is separate and ship-lapped, and they all move freely. The underside of the seat has been strengthened with cleats. I attached them using elongated holes for the screws to allow for wood movement.
