"OF WIND AND FIRE"

A little help from Divine intervention.

I like to include scripture with my work. When I first started on this project I saw a dove and remembered the words from Matthew 3:16 - And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him.

I began this carving in July of 2004 when I saw the tree cutters about to down a cedar tree. The wood is aromatic cedar from the Mississippi gulf coast. I tried to think outside the box. All I had for tools was a bandsaw, portable battery operated Dremel, four small carving knives, and a sander. I ripped a cedar log with a chain saw and drew the dove onto the tree (bottom and sides). I spent the next two hours just looking at the wood and thinking, "I'm not sure at all if I can do this". Then the dove appeared! I am still amazed.
