WALNUT BLANKET CHEST

This one's for his wife.

SHOP OWNER: Mike Kelly

LOCATION: Austin, TX

I recently finished this walnut blanket chest for my wife. The box and drawers have dovetail joinery and the drawer carcass features splined miters and tongue and groove joints.

The drawer bottoms are half-inch solid walnut as are the upper and lower frame floating panels. I glued thin strips of cedar with no finish to the top panels of the upper frame.

I used shellac and water based polyurethane on the inside surfaces and about four coats of gloss polyurethane on all outside surfaces. The plans are from Woodsmith #32, Mar/Apr, 1984. The chest is 43 1/4" wide x 18 1/4" deep and 22 3/8" high. This is the same design I built earlier using cherry and featured in Shop Shot #103.
