Wooden Electrical Cover Plates

by John Foster

My wife asked me to make her some wooden cover plates. I was somewhat hesitant, and resisted for a while. When I finally got to it, it was incredibly easy to get near perfect results. First I planed the wood to the desired thickness. Then I screwed the old plastic cover plate to the wood, and routed out the receptacle holes with my trim router and a bushing the same size as my bit. I then drilled out and countersunk the screw holes, beveled the edges, and cut some relief on the backside where needed to accommodate any screws holding the outlet to the wall box.

By the way, switches work too, but you need to square out the corners with a file.
