A Woodworker's Spreadsheet
by Garrett Lambert
The link below will open a very large Excel spreadsheet compiled by Stephen Dalfollo-Daley that can be saved to your own computer. Note that it is a work in progress that Stephen will be updating from time-to-time, so check back occasionally.
Navigation is via tabs at the bottom of the sheet. First-time users should note that there are more tabs than those visible at first glance. 4 arrows just to the left of the first tab will bring others into view. The 2 outside arrows are like home and end keys, i.e. they take you directly to the first or last tab in the series. The middle 2 arrows simply shift the tabs left or right one tab at a time.
The tabs include:- Links to indexes for the back issues of many popular woodworking magazines
- Descriptions of woodworking videos
- Descriptions of Hand Planes
Please note that this information is largely from Patrick Leache's Blood and Gore, a website developed and owned by Patrick Leach, and is copyrighted. The site is well worth a visit from hand tool aficionados, but Mr. Leach has graciously agreed to the inclusion of some of his information here.
- Stephen's judgment on the quality of various brands of chisel
- Information on the stability of each of a wide variety of woods
- Information on shellac cuts
- A board foot calculator
- A raised panel calculator
- How to identify the manufacturers of Sears power tools
- Information on grinding wheels
- Blade angles for compound miters
- A table of American wood screws
- Two equivalency tables for drill sizes including pilot holes for taps
- Other tabs are still under development
