The competition: Make a peppermill. A peppermill, in its most elementary functional form, is a device incorporating a mechanism for grinding peppercorns. It may be made of single or multiple pieces of wood and then turned and/or carved or otherwise constructed. Other materials may be used besides wood, but wood must be the most prominent. Entries must be functional, however prizes will be awarded primarily for design and decorative values. Remember, this is a turning competition. Entries must have been turned on a lathe at some point in the process and evidence of turning must be obvious. Eligibility: Only amateur woodworkers are eligible to enter this contest. An amateur, for contest purposes, is someone who makes less than 25% of his or her income from the sale of their work, teaching and/or demonstrating woodturning. Judging criteria: Entries will be judged on the basis of design and craftsmanship. Design considerations include function, form, overall appearance, originality, materials selection and engineering. Craftsmanship includes fit and finish, as shown in the photos you submit, the quality of the turning and the turned surfaces, and the application of appropriate and well-executed finishes. The judges' decision will be final. To Enter: A minimum of three photos are required, but not more than five per entry are allowed. Our online entry form allows you to include descriptions for each of your photos. Please tell us anything about the conception or creation of your piece that will be informative to the judges in their deliberations. Entry fee: The fee to enter this contest is $15.00, payable online at time of entry, by credit card or PayPal. Limit: One entry per contestant. Timeline: Contest is now over.
